I just downloaded a 50 GB 4k mkv-file to my 2017 non-touchbar mac. I tried playing it with vlc on my 4k-monitor, but I only got like 0,2 fps and a lot of grey-ish pictures. I searched the web for other video players, but I found none that supports smooth 4k and mac. 5kplayer is supposed to play smooth 4k, but it was even worse than vlc. Please share your experience with 4k mkv on Mac. Edit: IINA seems to work if you only use one screen. Also you shouldn't watch HEVC 4k on your computer. Vlc 3.0 beta works great, but it eats cpu! I'm really glad I could save you the trouble here. I actually returned my original 13' MBPtb because I thought it wasn't capable of playing 2160p videos and bought the 15' which still had trouble. I finally found VLC3.0 and realized Apple is just really far behind in the 4k space. Hopefully High Sierra will fix this. Also - 3.0 is in beta - you should download the newest version every now and then to get the latest updates. If one version isn't working for you (some versions I noticed a brief skip every minute or so) then just grab a different day's build until you get one that works.
